Updates (Page 2)

This project is toast, burnt to a crisp. It ends here. I wiped my working install in the hopes of loading a fresh install of System 7.0.1 off apple's website only to find that there's some part of the end of the install disk 1 image that must be corrupted. I'm sure of that because after trying to reinstall three times, it always halts after finishing the tidbits disk and asking again for the install 1 disk at which point the install crashes and dumps out to the beginning. If anyone has a known working floppy of Install Disk 1 for System 7.0.1 that they could see fit to image and upload on the web somewhere, please let me know. That said I wish everyone a wonderful time and will have to drop out. Best of luck to all of you with your respective projects.

Feeling a little better today. I made a disk with the System 7.5 Network Access Image and booted from that, and then copied it to the harddrive and booted it from the harddrive. I then put Macbinary II+, Stuffit 5.4, and BinHex 4.0 on the harddrive too (using a floppy) just in case I might need them. I am currently working on transferring the 19 parts of System 7.5.3 and will try getting them to mount and installing that later. I have been using the trial version of TransMac to get Mac files onto Mac formatted floppies using my windows computer and then move them to the LCII. It seems to work pretty well. Apparently, at least according to the MacRumors forum the binned mac files are done that way so they can be transported through other system without loss of the resource fork of Mac files (they are represented instead as raw binary). So, hopefully I will be able to get this to work.

Yay for System 7.5.3 The good news is that I got it installed. I'll need to trim the memory use down a little as it's using just over half the total memory for the system but that should be easy. Unfortunately it still can't see the network card, I guess i'll have to figure that out somehow.

Alas, basically no progress. The machine can't tell that the card is there, despite the green light on the card being on when the cable is connected (it's not on on the hub or switch). This is proving to be truly annoying. I'm going to try the update to 7.5.5 and the asantelite installer (the v5.6.1 asante installer cannot detect any card). I hope that might help. At this stage i'm getting pretty frustrated and a little confused. It should work after all, it's an Asante MCLC Rev. A(with a chip labeled MCiLC) with a 10-BaseT connector. I can't see any reason for it not to work. Anyway, hope everyone else has achieved some measure of success. The general lack of success is making me think I should go find a basic interpreter/compiler for the LCII and try to write something for kicks, so I can alleviate the stress a little.
